The choir performed to a capacity audience, with a wide and varied concert program.

There have always been strong links between the choir and the church, and there were many familiar faces on stage, and indeed, the choir rehearse at Warley Woods Methodist Church (every Thursday evening).

The choir were joined by Judith Mosedale, Michaela Hinton and Emma Drain, who formed a trio especially for the concert.

Ron Hesp Retires...

Ron Hesp was a much valued and respected member of Warley Male Choir for forty years, and it was a pleasure for Steve Allen and Ron Sweetland to present him with his certificate.RonHRonMary2

It was also nice to see his wife, Mary, there for the occasion.  Ron’s love and knowledge of music made him an asset to the choir and he will be greatly missed.

Wesley Methodist Church - West Bromwich March 18th 2009

The choir were privileged to perform a concert at Wesley Methodist Church, West Bromwich on Wednesday 18th March; the concert also included the dedication of the church’s new organ.

Church Superintendent Minister, Rev Phil Thomas, opened the proceedings which included the dedication of the new organ followed by the combined choir and audience singing the great hymn by Brian Hoare, “Born in Song”. The evening then progressed with the choir performing a variety of pieces, some of which were accompanied by the “New Organ” by our accompanist Helen Parker; John Barber provided piano accompaniment to others. The audience were well entertained by Brian Boyce, compere for the evening, even if the minister of Wesley commented in his closing speech that they were some of the worst jokes he’d ever heard!

We always enjoy performing at this venue, least not because of their tiered seating in church which provides ideal staging for the choir. Our own Helen Parker was soloist for the evening, performing a number of popular pieces on the organ demonstrating its varied and superb voicing.

For the last choir item, our MD, Steve Allen, invited male members of the audience to join the choir in the singing of Morte Criste. Those that took up the invitation to join the choir for the last item were then told that in doing so, they were in fact now members of the choir and he expected to see them at rehearsal at 7.30pm on Thursday!

Full

A great night was had by all, it was great to see the church full to capacity and everyone appeared to enjoy the concert. Congratulations to our accompanist Helen Parker and the church on their fabulous new organ.

The Choir

Can you sing? Or read music? Quite a few choir members couldn’t when they first joined the choir. It isn’t a prerequisite to be able to read music (but it helps!).

About the Choir

wmcchoir1

The Warley Male Choir was formed in 1943 by a group of air raid wardens and has grown to become known and respected throughout the Midlands. Warley is in the West Midlands, situated between Dudley and Birmingham, in the borough of Sandwell.

Musical Director - Steve Allen

Most of our concerts are given in aid of charity and the choir has raised many thousands of pounds over the years. The majority of our concerts are given in the Midlands, but the choir has also performed in Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland, as well as many times in Wales, including visits to the International Eisteddfod at Llangollen. The choir has also toured Devon and Cornwall on three occasions, raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
